Classic is Groot is a vibrant and spectacular annual production created by Coleske Artists with a line up of South African stars showcasing a series of global classic pop and rock songs presented in an orchestral style. Since the Classics show spinoff started in 2015, it’s been lit by Joshua Cutts, and, as in previous years, the 2019 event included a lot of Robe moving lights. Lighting and all technical services and disciplines for the Sun Arena venue was supplied by Johannesburg-based rental company MGG. Gearhouse South Africa (GHSA) has invested in Astera, with the purchase of 48 Astera AX3 LightDrops. Purchased from Astera’s South Africa distributor, DWR Distribution, the AX3 LightDrops were needed for a series of high-profile weddings in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. Johannesburg-headquartered GHSA supplied the full technical production for these events in conjunction with, and working for, Israel-based event producer Tali Yacobi. In total, there were nine events related to three different weddings spanning a five-week period, for which it was decided to source all the kit from South Africa. Creative Technology (CT) has provided technical design, installation and integration of the AVIT system for the Palace in Motion show at Abu Dhabi’s Qasr Al Watan. Since it opened to the public on 11 March, the landmark has run a daily spectacular light and sound show as part of its efforts to showcase the UAE’s culture and history. SLS Production has made a substantial investment in Robe. Following an initial purchase of 50 MegaPointes last year, the UAE-based rental technical and production company added 86 Spiider LED wash beams, then 24 Pointes and a pair of DL4S Profiles. According to SLS Productions Founder, Martin Luiz, the investment was a response to the increasing demand for Robe fixtures on artists’ riders or lighting directors’ specifications. “There is a clear trend for using a range of Robe moving lights, and we need to be on top of this,” he stated. Taking a walk down memory lane, the boy band performed hits from the past 20 years, with Unusual Rigging and Engineering LLC providing the house rigging points for the production.
